Roxana Reyna, a Nurse Practitioner at Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi, TX, has been a WCC since 2007. In her 25 years as a NICU nurse, Roxana has been a leading advocate for wound care by researching and creating new ways to heal wounds.
She has been recognized by Johnson & Johnson for her work on a specialized dressing used for omphalocele, a birth defect of the abdomen wall which causes a baby’s organs to stick out through the belly button. This wound dressing research has been published in the Journal of Pediatric Surgery.
Roxana was also a 2023 recipient of the “Aurora Case Award” at the Arctic Midnight Sun Workshop in Reykjavik, Iceland for her innovative use of Kerecis fish skin. She is also involved in the MakerNurse program to help train other nurses. Her passion for finding solutions to difficult problems has even gotten her invited to the White House.
Roxana brings a creative spirit to her work to help heal her patients. “We can’t wait for a company to come up with something that will help our patients heal faster, so I have to think of it and create it on the spot at the bedside with what I have.” Her zeal for doing whatever it takes to heal wounds is impressive and inspiring. “That is what the nursing profession is; being able to assess a situation and maybe create something, evaluate it, and revamp it if you need to,” she says.
NAWCO is proud to have Roxana as a WCC! She has spent her career going above and beyond to help her patients. Roxana is proof that the clinician makes the credential.
